A Bunge Ltd. processing plant in Hamilton, Ont., has been given the green light by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to resume exports of canola meal.

The plant had been on an FDA list of sites assigned an import-alert status due to concerns about salmonella bacteria in the meal, used for animal feed. The restrictions have been in place since September 2009.

Shipping restrictions remain in place against Bunge’s canola plants in Nipawin, Sask., and Altona, Man.

Two plants owned by Archer Daniels Midland and one owned by Viterra also are on the import-alert list.
