Saskatchewan and Inner Mongolia plan to co-operate on agricultural projects.

Provincial agriculture minister Eric Upshall signed a memorandum of intent between the province and the autonomous region of China during a trade mission last week.

The memorandum allows for co-operation on “commercially viable” projects in animal husbandry development, meat processing, forage seed/animal feed production and processing and human resources training in the agriculture sector.

The minister, along with Syd Palmer of Canada Livestock Services at Marsden and Dave Fletcher of Brandt Industries in Regina, spent two days meeting with Inner Mongolian officials. Earlier in the week they met with China’s agriculture ministry, the Canadian Wheat Board, the Chinese Animal Breeding Services and other groups.

“China has plans to increase its agriculture production by 15 percent over the next few years,” Upshall said. “We are exploring ways of helping them achieve this.”
