The Town of Sexsmith in northwestern Alberta has extended its deadline for offers on a mothballed canola crushing plant.
The town took over the plant last year from the receiver, Richter and Partners, after it was unable to come up with a buyer for Northern Lite Canola Inc.
Carolyn Gaunt, the town’s chief administrative officer, said the new deadline is Feb. 15.
No purchase offers were received for the Nov. 15 and Dec. 15 deadlines.
She said the town may consider taking over operation of the plant if no offers are received.
“We’re not really sure. We haven’t made any heavy decisions yet.”
The crushing plant paid more than $300,000 taxes to the town at its peak. There was also a large economic spin-off in the surrounding area as Peace River area farmers trucked canola to the plant.
“It’s good for the area,” Gaunt said.
