Saskatchewan MLA Jack Goohsen has voluntarily withdrawn from the Tory caucus after being charged with a criminal offence.

Goohsen, who represents Cypress Hills, was charged with obtaining sexual services from a female under 18 and will appear in a Regina courtroom May 15.

In a letter to leader Bill Boyd, Goohsen said the alleged activity is not related to his duties as an MLA.

“I am not guilty of this charge and I fully intend to prove my innocence in court,” he wrote. “Until such time that this matter is resolved, I will be absenting myself from caucus meetings and resigning my critic and committee responsibilities.”

Boyd said he will wait for the outcome of the court case before deciding on Goohsen’s status within caucus.

Goohsen, a farmer, is married with six children. He was first elected in 1991.
