California-based Topcon Positioning Systems has bought NORAC Systems International Inc. of Sask-atoon.

NORAC produces agricultural sprayer boom height control products, which use ultrasonic sensors mounted on the booms to automatically keep them at the correct height above the crop or ground.

Topcon makes precise positioning hardware and software products designed for global surveying, agriculture, construction, civil engineering and other fields.

“NORAC and Topcon have collaborated well in numerous precision agriculture development projects and know that our synergistic technologies and distribution channels make this a great fit,” said Bill Strelioff, president and chief executive of NORAC Systems International.

NORAC is a Canadian company founded in 1974 with its headquarters in Saskatoon and subsidiaries in the United States, Europe, and China.

It will maintain its headquarters in Saskatoon along with satellite support offices in Minnesota, France, and the Netherlands, as well as a procurement support office in Shanghai, China.

With this acquisition, Topcon adds an additional engineering and manufacturing facility in Canada and raises the total number of Topcon employees dedicated to precision agriculture to more than 700.
