I have to respond to your story about the Quarter horse breeder who “had to” ship two truckloads of mares to slaughter (Horse breeding industry faces crisis, Aug. 26.)
She is no breeder. Her program is no better than a puppy mill. I personally do not know her but to produce that number of horses knowing that the market has declined is irresponsible. It’s breeders like this person who push to have slaughter plants reopened when in fact less horses need to be produced to begin with.
I’m hoping that the closing of U.S. slaughter plants will have the impact to slow down and stop the breeding of excessive numbers of horses. …
