The Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Corporation held meetings throughout the province in November and December to inform people about its recycling program, with attendance ranging from six to 40 people.

“Attendance is a bit lower than what we had hoped,” said Roberta Windrum, executive director of the corporation. “(There is) somewhat of a bit of apathy towards it.”

Tire retailers who register in the program charge an extra $3.50 per tire to handle the cost of recycling. “They send the money to us then we authorize the processor to pick up their tires,” said Windrum. There are approximately one million used tires generated annually in Saskatchewan.

“Municipal governments across the province have a serious problem with landfills rapidly filling and tires are a significant contributor,” said Saskatchewan Rural Municipalities representative Don Schlosser.

The scrap tire corporation has collected more than 60,000 tires since it began in May 1996.
