A timeline for changing the registration system was proposed in February:
- * Seed sector review * *
A review began last June and a report is expected this spring. It will recommend changes, but will not have all the answers to industry challenges.
- * Interim committee * *
This consultative committee of seed sector members could be established as early as this summer.
- * Regulatory changes * *
The interim committee will initially propose changes to increase flexibility in crop variety registration.
- * Start regulatory change * *
Could begin as early as this fall. Would trim the number of regulations that require cabinet approval to change. One idea is to convert many regulations into more easily adjusted administrative directives.
- * Permanent consultation * *
Industry-led committee would gather issues and ideas from regions or specific crop groups. Would work for industry consensus before asking federal regulators to make changes.
