What does it cost to outfit a kid for the good old hockey game?

Compared to soccer, where cleats are $69.99 and shin guards cost $12.95, a budding Wayne Gretzky won’t get into the rink for under $1,000. That doesn’t include registration fees, ice time or travel expenses.

The following items were priced in Calgary and are based on a medium-sized man.

A pair of Bauer Vapor 4 DW skates are $319.95. Tacks CCM are $269. Laces $3.29.

A full face mask costs $24.95 and a mouthguard is $34.95. A CCM helmet runs around $79.95.

Hockey pants cost between $79.95 and $132.95 while a sweater is $49.95. Suspenders are $10.99 and an athletic cup is $8.99. Elbow pads are $89.95.

Parents are responsible for goalie equipment, which is pricier. Goalie pants are $189.95, leg pads are $799.95 and chest and arm pads are $279.95. A goalie’s mask costs $249.95.

A puck is $3.95 and a water bottle is $5.95.

Total cost for a forward: $1,389.61.

On the other hand a pair of swim trunks costs about $20 and a swim cap is $2.95.
