RED DEER, Alta. — A laid back personality gave Dozer, a Holstein steer, a new career.

Originally destined for the feedlot, the animal’s quiet and friendly personality has seen it transformed into a show steer.

With less than 15 rides on Dozer, Katie Connolley of Onoway, Alta., rode the three-year-old Holstein into the arena at the Mane Event horse show without a worry.

The Red Deer, Alta., event ran April 24-26.

“It’s his first time off the farm. He is very calm,” said Connolley as she waited to enter the show ring.

Connolley said she taught Dozer to lead in five minutes, then tossed on a saddle for a funny picture. When he took the saddle well, she climbed on and was lead around the farm.

“I didn’t start with any goals,” said Connolley about her plans for Dozer.

When Mane Event organizers learned about Dozer, they asked her to come and be part of the event.
