Val and Ray Koskimaki have been in Salvador, Sask., for only 19 months, but they have already made an impact by opening a new seed cleaning plant.
The Koskimaki’s Arm Services Inc. plant has been cleaning seed for local farmers for two months, including removing ergot.
“We’ve been rolling good since March,” said Ray Koskimaki.
After selling a business in northern British Columbia, they moved to Salvador in west-central Saskatchewan on Highway 31, about half way between Kerrobert and Macklin.
“We decided that there was a great need (for a seed cleaner) in all these communities like Senlac, Major, Macklin, Unity, all over. So we decided to spend our life savings and sink ‘er in here.”
Total investment was about $1 million.
The fully automated plant has plastic flighting, which makes it gentle on seed and allows it to handle pulses as well as grain.
