AC Metcalfe has been named Seed of the Year, West.
The two-row malting barley variety was developed by Agriculture Canada barley breeder Bill Legge and the research team in Brandon and at the Cereal Research Centre in Winnipeg.
AC Metcalfe received full registration in 1997. It advanced disease resistance and quality traits compared to previous two-row malting barley varieties. It is used in many markets and is known for its consistency, high enzyme levels, rapid throughput in the malt house, and high levels of fermentable extract.

Seed of the Year is designed to recognize publicly developed varieties that have made a significant contribution to the economy, agriculture, and the Canadian public.
Part of the western award is a $4,000 scholarship for a student enrolled in a western Canadian university and currently completing a Masters or Ph. D. in plant breeding or genetics. Dr. Legge will review and select the scholarship award winner.
