CALGARY (Staff) – Alberta will spend $140 million on new schools and building renovations for the 1998-99 school year.
More than $100 million is designated for new buildings and modernization projects, said a release from Alberta Education. The province received requests for $347 million in projects.
With a growing population throughout Alberta, the school buildings board agreed to 43 projects for new buildings or additions. Another 44 modernization projects were approved to upgrade older schools and provide wiring for computers.
Projects totaling $122 million were approved for 1997-98. School construction costs range from $3 million to $8 million per building.
Three new schools will be built. Two elementary schools for the Calgary Separate School Board will be started and the public board gets another junior high school. Calgary has shown significant increases in student population in the last five years, growing by almost six percent since 1992.
High River will get a new school to serve kindergarten to Grade 9. Cochrane gets a new high school. St. Albert and Airdrie were granted new elementary schools.
