Monsanto Canada recently awarded more than $100,000 to the 70 winners of its $1,500 Opportunity Scholarship Program.

All applicants to the Opportunity Scholarship Program were required to submit an essay that answered the question, “In what area of agriculture or forestry would you like to work and why?”

Judges selected the winners based on their academic performance, leadership capabilities and involvement in charities or service groups in their local communities.

All of the recipients were high school graduates from farm families and are now enrolled in a first-year agriculture or forestry related degree or diploma program.

This year’s judging panel included Bob Adamson, director of the Agriculture Biotechnology Enrichment program, John Morriss, associate publisher and editorial director of Farm Business Communications, Ellen Pruden, education and promotions co-ordinator with the Manitoba Canola Growers Association and Johanne Ross, executive director of Agriculture in the Classroom in Manitoba.

Monsanto Canada has awarded almost $100 million in entrance scholarships to rural youth since 1991.
