The Saskatchewan SPCA is investigating a farm near Porcupine Plain, Sask., after 60 cows were found dead there earlier this month.

SPCA executive director Frances Wach said 280 cattle were removed Feb. 10 to livestock yards in Yorkton, Sask., while others “in distress” were euthanized on site.

“An officer did an inspection and found animals in poor and critical condition,” she said.

The SPCA was contacted by area residents who complained about the animals’ condition.

Deon Black, who farms near the 40-acre farm, noticed the animals deteriorating since the fall and dead ones being moved across the yard.

“The animals were looking skinnier and skinnier,” she said.

A hired man managed the herd for the owner, Joanne Tuleta of Indian Head, Sask.

No charges have been laid. The SPCA investigation is expected to take several months.
