OTTAWA (Staff) – Saskatchewan senator Eric Berntson has been named deputy leader of the Conservative opposition in the Upper Chamber.

It makes the former Saskatchewan deputy premier and farmer a key figure in the Progressive Conservative attempt to keep its presence on Parliament Hill.

Berntson has said the Conservative Senate majority will not use its numerical advantage to thwart Liberal government initiatives, but the Senate will be the only forum in which the party will be able to offer regular alternative ideas to Liberal policy.
