Sask. rural tourism excellence celebrated

Four rural businesses and individuals were honoured at the Saskatchewan

tourism industry’s recent awards.

From 104 nominations, a committee of 12 industry people determined the

13 award recipients.

Rookie of the year went to the Ice Dreams Canadian Winter Adventures

based in Kelvington. This award recognizes a first-year business that

had an immediate impact on the provincial tourism scene. This award is

sponsored by the Saskatchewan Opportunities Corp.

The award for a promotional or marketing campaign went to Thickwood

Hills Studio Trail Tour in Shell Lake, which won for its work to

promote a tour of eight local artist’s studios in August 2001.

The tour will be back in Shell Lake this year, featuring 13 artists.

The Land of the Living Skies award, sponsored by PrintWest, went to

Manito Outfitters in Marsden. This award recognizes a tourism business

that prevents and reduces the environmental impacts of the business

operations through careful planning and practice.

The Fred Heal tourism ambassador award, sponsored by Sask Lotteries,

identifies an individual who made a significant contribution to

promoting Saskatchewan as an ideal tourism destination. The award went

to Peter Kingsmill of Hafford.
