Sask. rancher head of sustainable beef roundtable

Market analyst Anne Wasko is the new chair of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef.

Wasko ranches with her husband Barry at Eastend, Sask., and replaces Cherie Copithorne-Barnes, who operates CL Ranches with her family near Calgary.

Wasko has been a livestock market analyst for more than 30 years starting with Canfax and later moving over to Gateway Livestock Exchange at Taber, Alta. She joined the roundtable last year, was a board member of the former Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency, and spent more than 20 years as a volunteer at the Calgary Stampede.

At Bar 4 Bar Ranch, the Waskos run a registered verified beef plus commercial cow-calf operation and participated in the McDonald’s Verified Sustainable Beef Pilot and the Canadian Beef Sustainability Acceleration Pilot.

The roundtable council includes members from all levels of the beef sector. The 2018-19 members are: Ryan Beierbach, Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association; Greg Bowie, Alberta Beef Producers; Bob Lowe, Canadian Cattlemen’s Association; Ryan Clisdell, Cargill; Rob Meijer, JBS Canada; Jeffrey Fitzpatrick-Stilwell, McDonald’s Canada; Chris Tindall, Costco; Tim Hardman, World Wildlife Fund U.S.; Kristine Tapley, Ducks Unlimited Canada; Deborah Wilson, BIX Systems; Les Wall, National Cattle Feeders Association; Julie Dawson, Agriculture Canada; Sean Royer, Alberta Agriculture; Grant Zalinko, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture.
