CanGro Processors has officially opened its new $10.8 million feed mill in North Battleford, Sask., and says the plant will be expanded in step with the provincial livestock industry.
“The livestock industry is a major contributor to your local economy, and the pool, through our Heartland subsidiary, is a major player in that sector,” said Saskatchewan Wheat Pool vice-president Marvin Wiens. Sask Pool owns CanGro.
“The opening of this facility complements our expansion into hog production and the growing cattle industry.”
The plant will produce up to 80,000 tonnes of feed per year. While its main product will be pig feed, it will also produce rations for cattle, bison, elk and horses.
Heartland owns hog barns and auction markets in northwestern Saskatchewan and throughout the Prairies.
Wiens said local farmers will be able to sell feed grains to the plant, giving them a valuable new market.
“North Battleford was a logical place to build our first new feed operation,” said Wiens.
“You have a good supply of coarse, good feed grains, and that’s essential to producing a quality feed product.”
