REGINA (Staff) – That “good old Saskatchewan spirit” means farmers aren’t left out of provincial politics, says NDP candidate and Danbury farmer Ron Harper.
“That camaraderie, the co-operation we share here amongst neighbors and friends is something we enjoy but overlook,” said Harper, who is running in the Canora-Pelly riding.
When the election was called Harper, whose 1,200-acre mixed farm is in part of east-central Sask-atchewan soaked by spring floods, hadn’t even been able to do any pre-working of his land.
But because neighbors and friends offered to do most of the seeding and field work, Harper has been able to spend most of the time campaigning.
While the June 21 election date wasn’t known until three weeks ago, Harper said any political aspirant in Saskatchewan should know provincial elections are called in spring or fall – seeding or harvest time.
Last week, an article in The Western Producer outlined troubles candidates in Canora-Pelly riding are facing juggling farm work with campaigning.
