Spring weight restrictions affecting provincial truck traffic in Saskatchewan will come into effect March 15.

Truckers hauling goods or cargoes on secondary highways in Saskatchewan are advised to monitor their weights closely to avoid fines and prevent damage to the provincial highway network.

“On different occasions throughout the year, we adjust allowable weights to ensure the efficient movement of goods while protecting our highway infrastructure,” said provincial highways minister Jeremy Cockerill.

“It’s imperative we protect our road network at this time of year by reducing the weights trucks are allowed to carry.”

Winter weight allowances will be removed on secondary highways beginning at 12:01 a.m. March 15 and regular weight limits will come into effect.

The provincial restrictions will only apply to secondary highways in Saskatchewan. They do not apply to primary highway routes such as Highway 1, Highway 11 or Highway 16.

Spring road bans aimed at protecting municipal roads will also come into effect soon.

Municipal road bans are applied each spring by rural municipalities and typically reduce allowable road weights by 10 to 15 percent.

Road bans are usually put in place in March, before the spring thaw, and typically remain in place until late April or early May, depending on conditions.

Saskatchewan truckers are encouraged to monitor load weights and learn more about how their operations might be impacted on all anticipated routes.
