SASKATOON – Canada’s first conference hosted by Safety 4 Just Kids is an important step in educating the farm community, says one of the organization’s founding members in Waldersee, Man.

“It is important that people know of the resources out there to teach children if they want to,” said Diane Mauthe. “We want to broaden out, to let other communities and people know they can form chapters.”

Safety 4 Just Kids has two other Canadian chapters in Hamiota, Man., and Dodsland, Sask. The conference, in Portage la Prairie, Man. Oct. 19-21, is expected to offer educational seminars for adults and programs for children.

The Waldersee chapter reaches kindergarten to Grade 12, mainly through school presentations and books.

But contact with all age groups, including adults, is necessary, said Mauthe, a farm woman with three children. When children talk to their parents about a presentation at school, or parents look at the safety books the children bring home, “the issue (farm safety) comes out at some point and is discussed,” said Mauthe.
