Canada’s rodeo legends will soon have a new museum housed in one of Calgary’s landmark cowboy restaurants.
The Canadian Rodeo Historical Society and the Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dance Hall have agreed to build a 4,000 sq. foot facility for the Canadian Rodeo Hall of Fame’s memorabilia.
The society was founded in 1979 and has a large collection of photos, plaques and other artifacts honouring hall of fame inductees. They have been held in storage since the Western Heritage Centre at Cochrane, Alta., closed about five years ago. For a time material was displayed in a mobile trailer.

Society president Lester Gurnett said the group had been looking for space to properly display the items when restaurant owner Harris Dvorkin made his offer.
“We wanted to find a home that was suitable for the long term,” Gurnett said. “There is a lot of pride for the people inducted into the hall of fame. Being inducted into a storage unit doesn’t mean much.”
The hall of fame inducted its first contestant, Pete Knight, and its first animal, Midnight, in 1981.
Since then, more than 140 people have been inducted into the hall.
