CAMROSE, Alta. (Staff) – For some Alberta Women’s Institute members, a resolution over patriotism likely renewed memories of the great Canadian flag debate 30 years ago. For others, it was an issue that didn’t need to be discussed.

A resolution presented by the Westlock and Belvedere Women’s Institutes proposed a modified pledge to the Canadian flag to reaffirm patriotism and national identity.

After considerable debate the suggested pledge is, “I salute the flag, the emblem of my country; and to Canada, I pledge my love and loyalty.”

In explaining their desire for the pledge, Muriel Robins of Westlock said, “we feel it does not interfere with any ethnic groups because as a citizens of Canada they have taken the oath of allegiance.”

Others complained it smacked of the American institution of swearing allegiance to the flag. Kathryn Habberfield said it attempts to impose patriotism.

“I think it’s kind of pie in the sky … it cannot be legislated,” she said.

Others defended the notion of a pledge because of the waves of new immigrants who need a Canadian tradition such as a statement that affirms allegiance.
