Another major swine genetics company is making a play for the expanding hog market in

Western Canada.

Genetiporc Canada Inc. has built two new multiplier barns near Hamiota, Man., housing

5,000 sows.

Hogs will be available to farmers in 2001, said the company’s general manager.

“There’s been a significant demand for our animals in Western Canada but until now we’ve

been unable to address it,” said Ivor Bernatsky.

Freight costs and tight supplies have kept the company from shipping stock to Western

Canada from its St-Bernard, Que., headquarters in the past, said Bernatsky.

Genetiporc will also open a new Manitoba office with veterinary, nutrition and management

specialists.

The multiplier barns are a joint venture with Premium Pork, a production company based in

Lucan, Ont. According to Successful Farming magazine, Premium Pork is one of the 50

largest pork producers in North America, with 20,000 sows.
