Protesters trying to derail federal government plans to close the national prison farm system will make what could be a last stand in Kingston next week.
On Aug. 3, Corrections Services Canada (CSC) plans to auction off the 130-head dairy herd at the Frontenac Institution using the Ontario Livestock Exchange (OLEX) as its auctioneer.
The coalition of prisoner rights groups, community activists and farm groups plan to block the road in front of the prison that day.
Local National Farmers Union president Dianne Dowling said Save Our Prison Farms’ first line of defence is to try to convince OLEX to back out of the auction. Several other auction houses refused to take part.
