Premier Klein’s new cabinet a mix of old and new faces

With its renewed mandate Alberta’s Progressive Conservative government has some new faces mixed with the old in its cabinet.

Premier Ralph Klein named Red Deer MLA Stockwell Day to the job of provincial treasurer and deputy premier. Day promised to keep the budget on the same course as former treasurer Jim Dinning who retired this year.

The rest of the cabinet:

  • Shirley McClellan is minister of community development, which includes responsibility over women’s issues, seniors advisory council, human rights and citizenship, Wild Rose Foundation, alcoholism and drug abuse commission, major fairs and exhibitions and recreation.

  • Pat Black is minister of economic development and tourism which includes responsibility for tourism, gaming and liquor commission, racing commission, Alberta Opportunity Company, telecommunications and Heritage Foundation for medical research.
  • Halvar Jonson is minister of health.
  • Ty Lund is minister of environmental protection, which includes forests, parks and wildlife divisions, natural resources conservation board and public lands.
  • Gary Mar is minister of education.
  • Murray Smith is minister of labor, which includes responsibility for the labor relations board, workers’ compensation, professions and occupations, occupational health and safety and freedom of information and protection of privacy.
  • Stan Woloshyn is minister of public works, supply and services.
  • Ed Stelmach is minister of agriculture.
  • Jon Havelock is minister of justice and attorney general and government house leader.
  • Steve West is minister of energy.
  • Clint Dunford is minister of advanced education and career development.
  • Lyle Oberg is minister of family and social services.
  • Iris Evans is minister of municipal affairs.
  • David Hancock is minister of federal and intergovernmental affairs which includes aboriginal affairs and Metis settlements commission.
  • Lorne Taylor is minister of science, research and information technology.
  • Pearl Calahasen is minister without portfolio responsible for children’s services.
  • Rob Renner is government whip and Julius Yankowsky is deputy whip.
  • Walter Paszkowski is minister of transportation.
