ARDROSSAN, Alta. – The Prairies’ $38 million a year mushroom industry produces 21 million pounds of fungi a year.
The Alberta Farm Writers Association recently toured Superior Mushrooms of Ardrossan, Alta.
The operation is one of just five remaining mushroom farms on the Prairies.
Manager Wanda Ziober said problems affecting mushroom production are similar to other farm industries.
While demand for product outstrips supply, finding enough staff is a struggle.
“It’s tough to find help, but the ones I have are wonderful,” Ziober said.
There hasn’t been a mushroom plant startup in years because of the high cost, she added. Her farm is a third generation business.
