Canadians are less concerned about what hogs do to the environment than they are about pork safety, humane treatment of swine and the economic well-being of pig farmers.
That’s one finding from an Angus Reid poll conducted last October and commissioned by provincial hog producer groups.
National Attitudes Toward Pork Production surveyed 1,500 people and ranked the hog industry issues that concern Canadians.
Manitobans are more likely than other Canadians to worry about the environmental impacts of hog operations.
They are also most supportive of strong government regulations in the hog industry.

Nationally, food safety is the top concern for Canadians, the poll suggests.
It also found that consumers trust inspection systems and are generally confident that pork is safe to eat.
Urban Canadians were particularly concerned about the care and treatment of hogs. Overall, poll respondents believe hogs are treated well.
Canadians also expressed concern about genetically modified feed and hogs.
Marcel Hacault, chair of the Manitoba Pork Council, said he is encouraged that Canadians see farmers as a key source of credible information on the hog industry.
