Pet food processed in Rosthern, Sask., is moving onto Calgary store shelves this month.
Horizon Manufacturing Inc., which opened a 6,000-sq. foot $1.8 million plant in the north-central Saskatchewan community in April, is currently processing 4,000 pounds of raw frozen and dry food an hour two days each week.
Jason Skotheim, vice-president of operations and co-founder of Horizon, said the company is seeking markets in Western Canada and “starting to get a presence” for the new pet food product.
“We’re pretty much on target,” said Skotheim, who noted they are working with a distributor who deals with 600 stores.
The ingredients, which come mainly from Saskatchewan, include beef, chicken, fruit, vegetables, hull-less barley and oats.
Many pet food companies are part of larger livestock feed industries with byproducts to get rid of, said Skotheim.
The native of Prince Albert, Sask., who owns both cats and dogs, said Horizon is solely focused on the companion pet food market.
