Alberta Agriculture has published a new factsheet on perennial forage establishment in Alberta.
It provides helpful tips on selecting forage species, field preparation, weed control and fertility management and includes information on the steps to take to evaluate the success of forage seeding.
It recommends seeding densities for grass and legume species based on pure live seed, giving producers a more accurate estimate of their bulk seed requirements.
Another feature, the Forage Seed Mixture Calculator, will help producers calculate a mix and estimate a seeding density for row and broadcast seeding systems. Both tame and native forage species are included in the calculator.
The calculator is available as a web version and downloadable Excel version. The factsheet is available on the Alberta Agriculture website.
