In Peavey’s official Jan. 21 news release, the company announced the closure of 22 locations in Ontario and Nova Scotia. It called the move a “measured strategy to optimize Peavey’s retail footprint.”

Founded in Red Deer, the Canadian company has served rural and urban consumers for nearly 60 years. There are more than 90 locations across Canada that have been sources of products and supplies for repairs, animals and work wear.

“The Canadian retail environment has faced significant disruption over recent years, and Peavey has not been immune to these challenges,” Doug Anderson, president and chief executive officer of Peavey Industries LP, said in the release.

The company has partnered with Gordon Brothers Realty Services to “ensure a seamless transition for employees, communities and all stakeholders involved.”

However, there are growing rumours of closures outside of the two eastern provinces.

On the Saskatoon Reddit forum, a post with the title, Peavey Mart closing?, opens with the statement, “friend of mine was at Peavey Mart today (on 51st) and an employee told her they were closing. No idea if it’s just the Saskatoon Peavey Mart or all Peavey Marts. Anyone know anything else about this?”

The post went up Jan. 26. Many commentators expressed their sadness at the news. Others questioned what’s truly going on, as official news releases state no Saskatchewan closures while employees are telling those who ask that they are closing but have no further information themselves.

Similar outrage and sadness can be found on Facebook and Twitter.

According to Retail Insider, all Canadian stores are being shut down due to financial difficulties.

The publication reported that Peavey and Ace Hardware partnered in 2020 so that Peavey could gain some ground against competitors such as Canadian Tire, but as of Dec. 31, 2024, that partnership had ended.

In a Facebook post by Peace River store manager Brant Cambridge, he wrote that “many details are being kept confidential” and no time frame has been released.

“It’s difficult to come to terms with the closure of so many profitable locations in Western Canada, with Peace River being one of the most notable,” Cambridge wrote.

“The Peace River location recently achieved top sales growth company-wide, consistently delivering a healthy profit despite Peavey’s constant inventory challenges.”

Upon reaching out to the stores in Prince Albert, Sask. and Saskatoon, Glacier FarmMedia was told store managers are not allowed to comment to the media at this time.

An email to Peavey’s marketing team went unanswered.

Closures of the 22 stores mentioned in the Jan. 21 news release are scheduled on or before the end of April.
