OTTAWA (Staff) — More than 4,000 tonnes of prairie wheat have been sent to Ethiopia to combat a drought-induced food shortage, the Canadian Red Cross Society announced last week.

With $2.5 million from the Canadian International Development Agency, the Red Cross is shipping the wheat to be used in food-for-work programs.

The Red Cross said the wheat, purchased from the Canadian Wheat Board, will feed approximately 190,000 people.

Before the year is over, the Red Cross expects to send 13,500 tonnes of wheat to Ethiopia.
