Agriculture Canada will contribute $525,800 to Pulse Canada in support of the organization’s Pulse Innovation Project, aimed at expanding international markets for peas, lentils, beans, chickpeas and other pulse crops grown in Canada.

The contribution is part of a larger $3.2 million commitment announced in March 2006 by federal agriculture minister Chuck Strahl.

The Pulse Innovation Project is designed to expand international markets for Canadian pulse crops by generating science-based information that extols the health benefits associated with pulse diets.

Pulses are high in fibre and resistant starch, as well as protein, minerals and vitamins. These nutrients offer many benefits for health and chronic disease prevention, including lower cholesterol, blood sugar control and weight management.

The $525,800 contribution announced Aug. 3 will be delivered to Pulse Canada through the Canadian Agriculture and Food International Program. The Pulse Innovation Project will run until 2008.
