EDMONTON – Construction will soon begin on the expansion of Northlands Agricom, doubling the amount of exhibition space to 500,000 sq. feet.

Northlands president Jerry Bouma said the expansion allows the organization to attract more clients and add capacity, especially during Farmfair International when the facility is jammed to capacity with livestock.

“We’re limited in our ability to accommodate commercial trade show space,” said Bouma.

The first phase of the expansion will move east from the existing AgriCom, eventually creating one large facility.

In 2008 the Sportex building, which is an old curling rink, will be knocked down to make room for the expansion.

Besides construction, Bouma said Northlands wants to focus on four main areas:

  • Build on its existing reputation as a livestock exhibitor and become more involved with international markets and genetics.
  • Expand equine events to capture the growing popularity in equestrian events.
  • Capture the growing interest in value added foods and act as a showcase for value added products in Western Canada. Focus on new technologies and the growing interest in the bioeconomies.

“We want to build our agrifood presence,” he said.
