The Ontario government has decided to cut a $171 million annual farm tax rebate and the National Farmers Union says the result will be higher taxes for rural residents.

The rebate has been a long-standing provincial method of compensating farmers for part of their property taxes.

Now, farms will have a lower property tax assessment and the municipalities will be out the money.

The NFU says governments in rural areas will have to either raise taxes or cut services. It is asking the government to reconsider.

The end of the Farm Tax Rebate was announced as part of a package of radical changes announced in January by the provincial Conservative government.
