Philom Bios Inc., a Saskatoon-based inoculant company, announced a new business deal last week with Canadian seed company Brett Young Seeds.
Under the agreement, Philom Bios will take over development, production and marketing of Brett Young’s inoculant products, including the plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, or PGPR, sold under the trade names BioBoost and SoySuperb.
Registered in 2005, they were the first inoculant products approved for use in North America on crops such as canola, alfalfa, corn and soybeans.
BioBoost, which accelerates the oxidation of elemental sulfur to form sulfate, has been shown to produce a yield gain of about eight percent in canola without negative effects on seed quality.

Statistics Canada’s model-based production estimates are under scrutiny, but agency says it is confident in the results.
Lloyd Dyck, chief executive officer of Brett Young, said the partnership will help bring the benefits of PGPR to farmers.
“Philom Bios’ research and development, production and marketing expertise related to the delivery of high value inoculant products were key considerations in the culmination of this agreement,” he said.
Philom Bios president Calvin Sonntag described the deal as part of his company’s commitment to using new technologies to provide farmers with products that will result in more efficient use of fertilizer, along with faster plant growth and root disease control.
