East Diefenbaker Pork Producers has started operation of its Strongfield, Sask., hog barn.

Built in partnership with Saskatchewan Wheat Pool’s Heartland Livestock Services, the barn cost $11 million.

It is a three site, 2,400 farrow-to-finish facility that will employ 15-18 people when fully operating.

The project was financed through a combination of local investment, debt financing and the partnership with Heartland.

Strongfield is about 90 kilometres south of Saskatoon.

Diarrhea vaccine pursued

Saskatoon newsroom

The Veterinary Infectious Disease Organization and Vetrepharm Canada Inc. are joining forces to develop a vaccine for the prevention of diarrhea in calves.

The product will be based upon technologies developed by VIDO researchers in Saskatoon. VIDO will produce the genetically altered virus for the vaccine and lead the clinical trials.

Vetrepharm of London, Ont., the largest Canadian owned animal health company, will provide the material used in the adjuvant that will improve the vaccine’s immune responsiveness.

It will also collaborate on the vaccine formulation and direct the product through the regulatory process. Vetrepharm will have global marketing rights for the vaccine.
