Elaine Shein has been appointed editor and deputy publisher of The Western Producer, effective June 10.

Shein, 34, has been with the newspaper for more than 10 years, initially serving as an intern in 1987 and then returning as an editor-reporter in 1989. After a brief term as supervising editor, she was appointed managing editor in 1993.

Shein was raised on a farm in the Alticane, Sask., district and first began her relationship with the Producer as a writer for the Young Co-operators Club, a youth feature section.

The new editor has a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of Saskatchewan and a bachelor of arts degree in journalism and communications from the University of Regina. She is president of the Saskatchewan Farm Writers’ Association and past-president of the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation. Shein also serves on the board of the Canadian Association of Journalists as secretary-treasurer.

Speaking on the day of her appointment, Shein said she plans “to uphold the quality and integrity of the best agricultural newspaper in Canada.”

Shein replaces former editor Garry Fairbairn.
