If Ontario New Democrat MP Malcolm Allen gets his way, Oct. 10, 2011, will be the first ever National Local Food Day in Canada.
Last week, the NDP food safety critic tabled a private member’s bill asking Parliament to give that designation to the Friday before Thanksgiving each year.
He hopes to talk to other parties about making support bipartisan and getting the bill passed quickly.
“I will talk to the other parties,” he said. “If the government wants to adopt this and make it their own, I would be happy to give up ownership.”
Allen said a designated day would be more than symbolic.
It would remind Canadians that they should support local farmers who are an important part of the community and the local economy, he said.
The MP said his bill is meant to make people think about local farmers.
