Micropropagation lab comes to Sask.

REGINA (Staff) – A micropropagation laboratory and greenhouse will be established in Biggar, Sask., the province and MicroGro International Research Inc. announced last week.

Micropropagation is a technological system by which an infinite number of plants can be produced from a single plant.

The development is expected to be complete by fall, employ 15 to 20 people and generate first-year sales of more than $1 million.

MicroGro is a joint venture owned by members of the province’s horticulture industry, Prairie Malt Ltd., the Biggar and District Venture Corporation and Ag-West Biotech Inc.

The venture corporation raised $350,000 in equity funding from the community, while Saskatchewan Economic Development Corp. (SEDCO) is providing a $350,000 loan to help finance the operation.

MicroGro will service local, national and international markets.
