The Manitoba Metis Federation sees opportunity in the ongoing challenge of finding workers for the province’s swine industry.
Working with Manitoba Pork, the federation has recruited 15 Metis people for a six-week entry level training course at Assiniboine Community College.
The project is funded by Human Resources Development Canada.
Students will spend 75 percent of their time getting practical experience on a hog farm.
“This is the first step leading to meaningful long-term employment of Metis people in this rapidly growing pork industry,” said David Chartrand, president of the federation.
In a news release, Chartrand said students will be able to later take more advanced courses.
The federation worked on a similar training program for 25 people in the trucking industry with Reimer Express.
The federation is also discussing a training program with Maple Leaf Foods for the company’s new Brandon plant.
