Merit awards given

Saskatchewan Co-operative Merit Awards were recently given to individuals and groups who have contributed to their communities and co-ops.

Beryl Bauer of Lake Lenore received the Saskatchewan Co-operative Enterprise Award for creating a new co-op store in a town that was about to lose its grocery store. Another award was given to the New Beginnings Housing Co-operative Ltd. in Prince Albert for making home ownership available to people who could not meet the financial requirements.

Six people who have made contributions at the provincial and community level received Order of Merit awards.

Jim Cinnamon of Carnduff has been a Federated Co-operative Ltd. delegate for 15 years and spent 37 years on the Carnduff Co-op board, including 19 years as president. Cinnamon has also served as a committee member, secretary and chair of the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, and has been involved with 4-H and the local hospital board.

Bryan Kirk of Melville has helped his local retail co-op for 27 years. He has served as a Sask Pool committee member and has been a co-op implements delegate, director of the Melville Consumers Co-operative and president of Prairie Co-op Ltd.

For nearly 30 years, George Cristo of Assiniboia has been a delegate with The Co-operators, Interprovincial Co-op Ltd., the Canadian Co-operative Association and Cenex. He was a member of the Assiniboia Mutual Feeders Co-op board for six years, and has spent 16 years as a Sask Pool committee member.

Victor Hay of Christopher Lake has spent 40 years working with co-op, agriculture, community and health-care projects. He was director of the Matador Co-op farm for 15 years, the Co-operative Superannuation Society, Pioneer Co-op, the Saskatoon Co-op and the Co-operative Clinic in Prince Albert.

Tompkins resident Russell Simpson was on the national board of directors of the Canadian Co-op Woolgrowers for 11 years and served the Pioneer Co-op for 26 years as committee member and director. He has also been involved with the Tompkins Livestock Co-op, Tompkins Credit Union, Pioneer Co-op and Sask Pool.

Enos Sproat of Kipling spent 18 years as a district delegate to Federated Co-op and was one of four original members of the Farm Land Security Board. He served on the Saskatchewan Farm Debt Review Board until 1995 and 15 years on the Sask Pool committee. He is involved with the Rural Municipality of Kingley’s agricultural committee and other community activities.

The awards were presented Oct. 18 to mark Co-operatives Week in Saskatchewan.
