SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) – Australia is chasing more large wheat sales to China from a crop expected to be one of the biggest on record.
There is optimism despite fears over the possible return of El Nino drought and concerns about incursions of Eastern European wheat into northern hemisphere export markets.
“Australia’s pretty well on top of the game,” said Keith Perrett, head of the Grains Council of Australia.
Growers and AWB Ltd., which controls Australia’s annual wheat sales, have dismissed both fears.
“The potential is there for a very good crop,” said Perrett.
“I’d say we can do a 22 million tonnes crop without too much trouble at all.”
AWB’s wheat crop forecast is 21-24 million tonnes, said spokesperson Ryan McKinlay.
