Derailed train cars tore up a stretch of track near Binscarth, Man., last week.

Four cars at the end of a train derailed during the early morning hours of May 20, said CP Rail spokesperson Ian La Couvee. No one was injured and no estimate of damages was available.

In a May 21 interview, La Couvee said the derailment was still under investigation. The cars were dragged “several miles” before the engineer noticed a problem.

Damaged track was under repair last week in attempts to reopen the line. La Couvee expected the line through Binscarth to be back in service for the long weekend. Train traffic had to be rerouted in the meantime.

When interviewed May 21, George McDonald could see the damage from the front door of Kay’s Restaurant in Binscarth. He was answering the phone while restaurant workers delivered food to CP workers.

“It happened about 100 yards west of here,” said McDonald. “It was a pretty big mess for about 900 feet.”
