Manitoba’s agriculture critic is hitting the road to find out how poor commodity prices are hurting the rural economy.
“We have to get together different farm groups … into one room and work toward a common goal,” said Rosann Wowchuk, NDP MLA for Swan River.
Wowchuk planned forums in seven towns from Jan. 20 to Feb. 10.
She has invited local members of Keystone Agricultural Producers, Manitoba Women’s Institute and the National Farmers Union to speak at each meeting, along with members of the public.
Wowchuk said all relevant issues are up for debate and suggestions, including safety nets, the role of governments in agriculture, transportation costs and the Estey review of the grain transportation system.
After the tour, she plans to compile the information and suggestions into a report.
Wowchuk also said she thinks it’s shameful the Manitoba government is not in session right now, even though farmers are suffering through low prices.
