WINNIPEG (Staff) – A family near Souris, Man., is wondering what to do after a fire leveled their hog barn.
“It’s kind of a weird feeling,” said Brigitte Vandevelde, who owns the barn with husband Curtis. “One day you have chores to do, the next day it’s all gone.”
She said a passerby told them of smoke coming out of the barn at about 12:40 p.m. on Jan. 24. By the time the fire department arrived, the fire was out of control.
Vandevelde said all 900 hogs died, most likely of smoke inhalation. The fire caused about $250,000 in damage.
The provincial fire commissioner’s office is investigating the fire, but hadn’t determined a cause at press time.
