RCMP continue to investigate the cause of a fatal crash near Balgonie, Sask., involving a GMC Yukon and a semi-trailer hauling horses.
The driver of the Yukon, an 85-year-old man from Hubbard, Sask., was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
The semi-trailer driver was not injured.
The semi-trailer was carrying 27 horses bound for slaughter when the accident occurred Sept. 25. Fifteen survived the crash.
First responders, local veterinarians and farmers with horse experience worked to free the horses from the trailer.
Three of the 12 horses that died were euthanized by RCMP at the scene, on advice from vets.
The crash occurred when the driver of the Yukon attempted to cross the westbound lane of Highway No. 1 from the town of Balgonie.
No charges have been laid.
