Manitoba is speeding down the internet highway with a $300 million investment by the provincial telephone company.
The province joined Alberta and Saskatchewan in recent announcements of high speed internet service expansion, which allows for live videoconferencing and faster sound and picture service. The expansion will also bring the new service to rural areas.
So far, Manitoba is spending the most money. Alberta is rumored to be spending $200 million when it awards a contract next month, while Saskatchewan has not named a figure for its telephone company.
Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. said in a news release the three-year plan “will provide 85 percent of Manitoba business and residential consumers dedicated access to internet service currently available in Winnipeg and Brandon, and up to 200 times faster than any dial-up service currently available in rural Manitoba.”
