New magazine owners

The Canadian Limousin Association became the sole owner of the Limousin Voice magazine effective April 28.

Association marketing manager Debbie Verbonac has been named editor and publisher and the first issue under CLA ownership will be the June-July Herd Reference issue.

Limousin Voice will be published four times a year and complemented by the existing Bottom Line Commercial newsletter, which will be published twice a year.

Producers of the year

The Saskatchewan SPCA has named Les and Linda Johnston of Filmore, Sask., and Conrad and Alice Vogel of Pelly, Sask., its producers of the year for 2004.

The awards acknowledge producers who take exceptional care of their animals and who use husbandry methods that take into account animals’ psychological and physical well-being. They were presented at an SPCA luncheon in Regina on April 23.

The SPCA accepts nominations for the award each year. A selection committee reviews nominations and visits the finalists’ farms. All aspects of the farms are reviewed, including physical surroundings, management practices, medical and herd health programs and husbandry. The award is intended to promote the humane care of animals.

Performance awards

Alberta pork producers Roelof and Hennie Baas of Baas Farms near Tees, Alta., received two Olymel Reach for the Top awards at the recent Alberta Pork Congress in Red Deer.

The annual performance awards recognize the top pork producers in five categories: high health; core weight; 60/66 lean; high index and grand champion.

To qualify for the competition, producers must ship at least 2,500 hogs a year to the Olymel plant in Red Deer. Points are allotted in each category on every load of hogs shipped.

The Baas family received the highest index award and the grand champion award. It also placed second in the core weight category.

Baas Farms raises feeder pigs supplied by the Partners in Pork group of Rimbey, Alta., and ships 5,400 market hogs a year exclusively to Olymel.
